Equipping Partners for Ministry
in Latin America

Latin Equip was founded in 1986 by Steve and Shelly Hopkins, missionaries who had just returned from living in Mexico City for two years, where they served as staff pastors in a large church. In 1984 while serving in Mexico, Steve took his first trip to Peru. Steve and Shelly sensed a calling to help plant a church in Lima for Quechua Indians and were in preparation for this plan when they became introduced to Carlos and Celia Estrada, founders of a network of churches in Peru with missionaries in different parts of the world. What started as an honest and simple vision, became a passionate calling in the hearts of Steve and Shelly. Steve began to minister in Lima, and throughout Peru. Latin Equip honors the work of these pioneer missionaries!

In addition to ministering in Peru, Steve has also worked in Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and he’s ministered to Spanish-speaking congregations in France, Spain, and Australia.

The Heart of Latin Equip is leadership development in Latin America and for Hispanics wherever they may be found. Since 1986 Latin Equip has provided training and development for more than 5,000 pastors and church leaders.

In 2007 Latin Equip began its partnership with Global Advance and OPEX in providing leadership training to Christian business leaders throughout Peru. Our business leaders’ conference is the largest and most highly attended conference of its kind in the country, and has impacted hundreds of businesses. In applying biblical business principals, business leaders see their work impacting churches, communities, and employees.

Since 2008 Latin Equip has participated in ministry targeted especially to women, including four conferences and countless other training sessions. Through this targeted ministry, hundreds of women have seen the gospel change their homes, families, churches, and communities.

Latin Equip has targeted many groups of children for ministry over the years. Most recently with Torre Fuerte (Strong Tower) girls’ home in Arequipa, Peru, along with PK-Secondary Elim Christian School, a feeding program for children in Ica, Peru and teacher training in Lima. In 2015, Gateway Church partnered with Latin Equip to build onto the girls’ home in Arequipa and sent a team for teacher training and ministry to more than 500 children’s church workers and 600 children in Lima.

In 2018, Latin Equip, with the help of generous ministry partners and Cathedral of Faith in Lima, launched Carl’s Kitchen, a feeding program in Callao, Peru. We minister to nearly 100 children each week, as well as their families. We plan to launch a church at that location in 2019.

Steve & Shelly Hopkins

Steve and Shelly Hopkins are the founders of Latin Equip. As a teenager, Steve spent a year in Quito, Ecuador. They began their life of missions work as a family in June of 1983, when they packed up all of their belongings and their two small sons and moved to Mexico City. Many locations, one more child, and 3 million frequent flyer miles later, reflecting on their years of service motivates them as they look to the future. Their travels and ministry now span four continents.

Steve and Shelly are blessed with a growing family of three adult children, one daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, and four awesome grandsons.

Our purpose at LE is to build bridges with other ministries in their work in Latin America and beyond. To this end, we partner with such ministries as:
